Traffic system is a world-wide first for local engineer

An engineer in Pietermaritzburg has created a unique computer traffic control system capable of identifying and locating vehicles and traffic police, Mr Buttemer said.

Multi-storey car parks, factory grounds and toll roads, often closed by barriers, will benefit by the system, says Mr Buttemer. The transponder signal causes the barrier to lift automatically and lets the motor vehicle in.

In 1972, Electromatic (now Abcotronics) introduced the automatic barrier system to South Africa for parking control.
